The Premiers of each of the 10 provinces and 3 territories present the Council of the Federation Literacy Award for International Literacy Day. The 2025 International Literacy Day is September 8.
Each year, this award celebrates a Yukoner who is changing lives through literacy.
Deadline
The 2025 nomination deadline is June 6, 2025.
Who can you nominate?
You can nominate someone who helps Yukon adults get the literacy skills they need to meet their goals.
The award honours:
- learners;
- educators;
- practitioners;
- volunteers;
- First Nations' programs;
- community organizations; and
- businesses.
Eligibility
A nominee must:
- be a Yukon resident who is at least 19 years of age;
- have basic literacy skills in English or French; and
- be involved in enhancing adult literacy.
The Council of the Federation has traditionally focused on English, French and Indigenous languages, but nominees in all languages will be considered.
Types of literacy
This award recognizes many forms of literacy, including the following:
- cultural literacy: engaging with traditions and history
- digital literacy: finding, evaluating and communicating information using technology
- critical literacy: analyzing ideas, opinions and perspectives
- media literacy: interpreting signs and symbols in mass media
- health literacy: understanding information that’s important to your well-being
How is excellence in literacy shown?
Past recipients have:
- set up new literacy programs or literacy organizations;
- provided outstanding literacy services;
- made a difference in people's lives with tutoring or adult education;
- inspired others as an adult literacy learner;
- made legal information more accessible;
- taken innovative approaches to literacy as reconciliation; and
- worked to revitalize a Yukon First Nations language.
The award is presented to a nominee who:
- has a vision to improve literacy and can inspire others;
- collaborates with partners in new and exciting ways;
- is not afraid to try something new that will benefit the community;
- values equity, cooperation and civic responsibility; and
- prioritizes success over acknowledgment.
Recognition
The recipient will be recognized publicly for their achievements at an award ceremony. They will receive:
- a Council of the Federation Literacy Award medallion; and
- a certificate from the Premier.

What happens after a recipient is selected?
We'll contact the recipient and all nominators. We'll host an award ceremony on or near International Literacy Day.
