Learn about continuing education requirements for psychologists

As a psychologist, you’re responsible for meeting continuing education requirements before applying to renew your psychologist certificate.

Continuing education

You must complete 75 hours of continuing education every 3 years. To stay on track, aim to complete at least 25 hours of continuing education each year.

We encourage you to provide us proof of any continuing education:

  • you've completed in the past year; or
  • when you complete a training course.

We'll track your training hours so you can be sure you meet the 75-hour requirement.

Building competency in key areas

To make sure you're building competence in key areas, every 25 hours of continuing education should include at least:

  • 3 hours of ethics education;
  • 1 hour of suicide prevention training; and
  • 2 hours of training in cultural competency in psychological practice.

Keep us informed with your continuing education form if you:

  • cannot complete training hours in these areas during a particular year; or
  • have plans to complete them in a future year.

Examples of continuing education include:

  • Relevant courses within scope of practice
  • In-service education or training
  • Formal continuing education courses and technical training
  • Courses leading to a new degree or diploma (1 course credit = 15 hours)
  • Distance education
  • Conferences, lectures, seminars or workshops
  • Reading or research using peer-reviewed articles
