The Yukon Development Corporation is helping to increase the supply of renewable energy and reduce diesel consumption in the Yukon. The Innovative Renewable Energy Initiative provides funding for community-led renewable energy projects.
Who can apply?
To be eligible to apply you must be a:
- Municipal government;
- First Nations government;
- First Nations development corporation;
- Community society or association; or
- Yukon-based business.
Eligible projects
Your project must generate electricity, heat energy or decrease demand on the grid. Projects must be based in the Yukon and use proven renewable energy technologies such as:
- wind turbines;
- biomass;
- gasification;
- energy storage;
- hydro;
- run-of-river hydro;
- photovoltaic solar panels;
- solar thermal collectors;
- geothermal; or demand-side management.
Funding amounts:
Funding covers up to 75 per cent of eligible expenses with a maximum of $500,000 per project. Applicants must cover the remaining 25 per cent of expenses, which can include:
- own-source funds;
- third-party contributions; or
- in-kind contributions (up to 10 per cent of the applicant’s share).
Funding by project phase:
- Feasibility phase – up to $150,000
- Design phase – up to $300,000
- Implementation phase – up to $500,000

Evaluation Process:
- Applications are reviewed to ensure they meet eligibility.
- An advisory committee evaluates the project based on its alignment with program goals, project readiness, and Yukon’s renewable energy needs.
Being eligible for and applying to the fund does not guarantee it will be accepted
