New online licensing system coming soon

We're moving to an online licensing system to make the renewal process more efficient and move away from paper forms.

We ask you not to renew until the new system is in place. We'll email registrants when the new system is launched and support you through the process.

Renew an optometrist licence

  1. Determine if you're eligible
  2. Complete the renewal application form
  3. Provide proof of continuing competency requirements
  4. Provide all other supporting documents required
  5. Pay your fees
  6. Submit your complete renewal application package

  1. Determine if you're eligible

    All optometrists in the Yukon must register, hold a licence and renew it every year.

    An optometrist licence allows you to use the title doctor of optometry and work to the full extent of your training within Yukon regulations.

    Renewal period

    All optometrist licences expire annually on March 31. Submit your renewal application before March 1. This ensures we can process your application before your licence expires.

    It's illegal to work in the new licence year before we’ve renewed your licence.

    Eligibility

    You're eligible to renew your optometrist licence if you meet all of the following requirements:

    • you're registered and hold a current licence in the Yukon as an optometrist; and
    • you've met the continuing education requirements.

    If you’ve had any complaints, disciplinary or criminal action against you:

    • we will assess your eligibility for registration or licensure on a case-by-case basis; and
    • you may not be approved for registration or licensing.

  2. Complete the renewal application form

    Please see note at the top of the page about our new online licensing system coming soon.

  3. Provide proof of continuing competency requirements

    Read the continuing education guide for full instructions, details and examples.

    • 6 of these 12 hours must be in treating and managing ocular disease.

    You must provide the following forms and documentation with your application. We may return applications that are missing required documentation.

    • This documentation must include:
      • your name;
      • course name;

      • date of completion.

    If you do not have a document with this information, then you may complete the verification of completed continuing education form. You must complete this form with either the course provider or instructor, or your supervisor.

    Continuing competency exemption request

    Meeting your continuing competencies is a legal requirement. We review exemption requests on a case-by-case basis and do not accept all requests.

    • We have removed this form in anticipation of the transition to the online licensing system. If you need this form before the system is in place, email or contact us.
