Renew a physiotherapist certificate

All licensed practical nurses in the Yukon must:

  • register;
  • hold a Yukon certificate; and
  • renew their certificate every year.

You can renew the following certficate types:

  • full;
  • inactive; and
  • interim (limited to one-time renewal).

You cannot renew courtesy, temporary or student certificates.

Each certificate type listed below includes information on:

  • eligibility;
  • continuing competency requirements;
  • the documentation you'll need to provide to renew; and
  • fees.

We recommend reviewing this information before you apply to renew you licence.

Renew using the online portal

Renewal period

The renewal period begins November 1. Apply for your renewal by December 15. This ensures we can process your certificate before it expires January 31.

It's illegal to work in the new certificate year before we've renewed your licence.

Certificate reinstatements

If you have not renewed your licence by March 31, you must:

  • apply for reinstatement; and
  • pay all applicable fees.

Processing time

We typically review applications within 30 business days. We'll confirm you've met all the legal requirements before we issue your licence.

We cannot process your application if you have not provided us with all the documentation we need.

A full certificate allows you to:

  • use the title of physiotherapist; and
  • work to the full extent of the Yukon's regulations.

Eligibility

You're eligible to renew a full licence if you:

  • hold a current full physiotherapist certificate for the Yukon; and
  • have met all continuing competency requirements.

Continuing competency requirements

The Yukon’s Physiotherapists Regulation, O.I.C. 2007/19 requires physiotherapists to keep their knowledge and skills up to date. You must do this by fulfilling annual continuing competency requirements. These include a specific number of continuing education and professional practice hours.

What hours can you claim in your renewal application?

Only hours you completed in the 5-year period before you submit your application.

Requirements

  • A total of 1,200 professional practice hours.
  • A minimum of 60 and no more than 300 of these 1,200 hours must be continuing education hours.
  • Up to 300 of your 1,200 professional practice hours can be professional volunteer hours.
  • The rest of your professional practice hours must be from professional employment activities within the physiotherapist scope of practice.

Additional documents

You must also provide us with the following when you renew online:

  • Verification of registration for all jurisdictions you are currently licensed in; and
  • Proof of liability insurance.

Fees and payment

Annual licence fee: $200

Late fee: $40 (charged to applications received between February 1 and March 31.)

If we approve your application, we'll email you an invoice for your annual licensing fee. Once you receive this invoice, you can pay through the portal.

An interim licence allows you to:

  • hold a certificate if you have not completed the required clinical assessment currently replacing the clinical component of the Physiotherapy Competency Exam (PCE);
  • work under supervision; and
  • use the title of interim physiotherapist.

Eligibility

You're eligible to renew an interim physiotherapy certificate if:

  • you hold a current interim physiotherapy certificate in the Yukon;
  • you’ve established a plan with Professional Licensing and Regulatory Affairs for completing the clinical assessment; and
  • this is your 1st renewal.

You can only renew an interim certificate once. After 1 renewal, you must apply for a full physiotherapist certificate.

You must also provide the following when renewing online:

  • Verification of registration for all jurisdictions you are currently licensed in; and
  • Proof of liability insurance.

An inactive certificate allows you to maintain your standing as a physiotherapist in the Yukon if you are not actively practising.

You can only renew an inactive certificate if you hold a current inactive physiotherapist certificate.

Eligibility

You're eligible to renew an inactive physiotherapist certificate if you hold a current inactive physiotherapist certificate for the Yukon.

Required documentation

You must also provide the following when renewing online:

  • Verification of registration for all jurisdictions you are currently licensed in.

All physiotherapists licensed in the Yukon can apply for the following endorsements.

  • Acupuncture
  • Acupuncture (Dry needling and intramuscular stimulation)
  • Spinal manipulation
  • Urogenital and rectal conditions

The following documentation must be submitted when you apply for any of the listed endorsements:

  • A copy of a diploma, degree or certificate for the completed program for the chosen endorsement; and
  • A copy of the documentation from the instructor or institution that shows the process and results of your final evaluation.

You must provide these in an electronic format such as JPG, PDF or PNG.

To add an endorsement to your licence simply go to “Request a licence change” when logged into the online portal. There you will find the “Request a special endorsement” button which will guide you through process.

Go to the online portal

  1. Log in.
  2. Update your continuing competencies.
    • Select the “Continuing competency” tab in the top menu.
    • Review what’s required, what you can claim and the documentation we need.

3.      Apply to renew your licence.

    • Select “Licensing” and “Renew my licence”.
    • Here you’ll find the step-by-step process to renew your licence.
    • Upload all the necessary documents and information we ask you for.

4.      Complete the application form and submit.
