The Medical Travel Program can help reduce your travel costs for fertility and surrogacy services not available in your home community. Coverage is not automatic and you must have approval before you travel.
What the program covers
Travelling outside of the Yukon
If you travel for a service not offered in the Yukon, you may be eligible for:
- airfare coverage; and
- a subsidy to help with accommodations, meals and transportation.
Travelling from your home community to Whitehorse
If you travel from your home community to Whitehorse for services not available in your home community, you may be eligible for:
- airfare coverage; or
- mileage for travel by personal vehicle; and
- a subsidy to help with accommodations and meals.

Eligible fertility treatments
The Travel for Medical Treatment Regulations define which fertility treatments may be eligible for medical travel support.
These include:
- Artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization, including:
- intrauterine insemination;
- therapeutic donor insemination; and
- cycle monitoring.
- Egg (ova) sperm and embryo donation
- Egg (ova) and sperm retrieval procedures
- Fertility preservation, including:
- egg (ova) and embryo freezing and thawing;
- sperm freezing, thawing and washing; and
- fertility preservation for age-related reasons.
- Intracytoplasmic sperm injection
- Ovulation induction
- Superovulation
- Tubal ligation reversal
- Vasectomy reversal and
- Assessments, consultations, diagnostic and other treatments including anesthesia, ultrasound or blood tests that are required in connection with any fertility treatment listed above.
Eligibility
To be eligible for medical travel support for fertility treatment, you must:
- be enrolled on Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan;
- be eligible under the Travel for Medical Treatment Act;
- have a physician, nurse practitioner or registered midwife submit an application for medical travel;
- receive the medical service from a licensed medical practitioner;
- travel for a service not offered in your home community;
- start your travel in the Yukon; and
- be approved for travel from the Medical Travel Program before you leave.
How to apply
Your physician, nurse practitioner or registered midwife must submit an application for medical travel. Once your travel has been approved:
- print the Medical Travel subsidy form; and
- have your medical practitioner sign the form at each visit to confirm the services you received.
After your trip, submit the form:
