You need a permit to conduct work or place a sign within the highway right-of-way in the Yukon.

Work alongside or on a highway

Apply for permission to work alongside or on a Yukon roadway. This includes:

  • brushwork;
  • infrastructure installation;
  • road surface work;
  • earthwork beside the roadway;
  • road maintenance; and
  • other work on the road or beside the road.  

Use this application if your work requires a road or lane closure. 

Before you apply

Before applying, you may need:

  • A sign permit
  • An assessment from the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board (YESAB)
  • Any required land use permits

Apply

You must:

  • Submit the application
  • Provide a proof of liability insurance in the amount of $2 million
  • Name the Government of Yukon as “additional insured” on the policy

The application fee is $100.

After you apply

We’ll notify you if your application was approved or denied within 4 to 6 weeks.

 

Put up a sign in a highway right-of-way

Businesses and individuals must apply for a permit to place a sign within a highway right-of-way.

Your sign must:

  • align with highway safety guidelines and the Visitor Information Sign Regulation; and
  • be for a business that provides visitor services, facilities or attractions located in the Yukon.

Apply

  1. Submit the application for review. Include information about:  
  • where the sign will be located;
  • the size of the sign; and  
  • sign contents.
  1. Once we review your application, contact your local grader station to:
  • arrange a site visit; and  
  • discuss appropriate locations for the sign.

The application fee is $25.

After you apply

We’ll notify you within 4 to 6 weeks if your application was approved or denied.

What to bring to your site visit

You need to provide your local road foreperson with:  

  • a completed and signed sign permit application form;  
  • specifications for the proposed sign. (Sign type, size, content, design and structural supports);
  • a copy of a valid business license or proof of registration under the Societies Act or other similar document; and
  • the non-refundable application fee of $25.
