Renew a midwife licence

All midwives in the Yukon must:

  • register;
  • hold a Yukon licence; and
  • renew their licence every year.

You can renew the following licence types:

  • full; and
  • inactive.

Each licence type listed below includes information on:

  • eligibility;
  • continuing competency requirements;
  • the documentation you will need to provide to renew; and
  • fees.

We recommend you review this information before you apply to renew you licence.

Renew using the online portal

Renewal period

The renewal period begins April 1. Apply for your renewal by March 1. This ensures we can process your licence before it expires March 31.

It's illegal to work in the new licence year before we've renewed your licence.

Licence reinstatements

If you have not renewed your licence by March 31, you must:

  • apply for reinstatement; and
  • pay all applicable fees.

Processing time

We typically review applications within 30 business days. We'll confirm you've met all the legal requirements before we issue your licence.

We cannot process your application if you have not provided us with all the documentation we need.

A full licence allows you to:

  • use the title of midwife; and
  • work to the full extent of Yukon regulations.

Eligibility

You're eligible to renew a full licence if:

  • you hold a current full licence for the Yukon;
  • you’ve met all continuing competency requirements; and
  • you hold professional liability insurance covering your practice in Yukon – this should be for at least:
    • $10 million per claim; and
    • a total of $20 million annually for all possible claims.

You can meet this insurance coverage requirement:

  • through employment as a midwife with the Government of Yukon’s Department of Health and Social Services (the department indemnifies midwife employees); or
  • by purchasing private insurance.

Continuing competency requirements

The Yukon’s Midwives Regulation requires midwives to keep their knowledge and skills up to date. You must do this by fulfilling annual continuing competency requirements. These include a specific number of continuing education and professional practice hours.

You can only claim hours in your renewal application that you completed in the 3-year period before you submit your application.

Requirements within 3 years before applying

  • At least 60 continuing education (CE) hours (at least 50 per cent must be clinical in nature)
  • At least 2,400 professional practice hours
  • At least 15 births as a primary or secondary attendant, 10 of which you provided continuing of care to

Requirements annually

The annual requirements are that:

  • you've attended at least 3 peer or interdisciplinary case reviews in the previous year; and
  • you maintain current certifications in:
    • cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR);
    • neonatal resuscitation (NNR);
    • fetal health surveillance (FHS); and
    • emergency obstetric skills (ES).

You must also provide us with the following when you renew online:

  • Your verification of registration – send it directly to Professional Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (PLRA) from all the jurisdictions you’re currently licensed in and every jurisdiction you have ever practised midwifery in.
  • A criminal record check (we require a new check every 2 years) – if you lived or practised midwifery outside of Canada in the 12 months before your application, provide a criminal record check from that jurisdiction as well.
  • Proof of professional liability insurance

Fees and payment

Administration fee: $50

Annual licence fee: $200

Payment

  1. When you submit your application online, you must pay your administration fee.
    • You must pay this fee before we'll review and approve your application.
    • The online system will prompt you to pay this by credit card.
    • This fee is non-refundable.
  2. If we approve your application, we'll email you an invoice for your $200 annual licensing fee. Once you receive this invoice, you can pay through the portal.

An inactive licence allows you to maintain your standing as a midwife in the Yukon if you will not be actively practising.

Eligibility

You're eligible to renew a full licence if:

  • you hold a current full or inactive licence for the Yukon; or
  • you hold a current full or inactive licence in another Canadian jurisdiction.

Additional documents

You must also provide us the following when you renew online:

  • Your criminal record check (we require a new check every 2 years) – f you lived or practised midwifery outside of Canada in the 12 months before your application, provide a criminal record check from that jurisdiction.
  • Your verification of registration – sent it directly to Professional Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (PLRA) from all jurisdictions you’re currently licensed in and every jurisdiction you have every practised midwifery in.

All midwives licensed in the Yukon can apply to provide certain advanced practice services. These are:

  • hormonal contraceptive therapy;
  • using acupuncture during labour or the post-partum period;
  • serving as first surgical assist for a caesarean section;
  • intrauterine contraception;
  • managing sexually transmitted infections;
  • inducing or augmenting labour in hospital;
  • monitoring epidural anesthesia in hospital;
  • conduct a vacuum-assisted delivery in hospital;
  • evacuate the uterus;
  • provide well-baby care for up to one-year post-partum; and
  • provide sexual and reproductive health care to individuals who may become pregnant.

Providing proof of certification

The Yukon has adopted the British Columbia regulator's frameworks for certification of these services. You'll need to provide proof of completion of the certification required by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives.

You must provide your proof of completion in an electronic format such as JPG, PDF or PNG.

Add an advanced practice to your licence

Go to “Request a licence change” when logged into the online portal. There you will find the “Request a special endorsement or advanced certification” button which will guide you through process.

2. Update your continuing competencies.

  • Click on the “Continuing competency” tab in the top menu.
  • Review what’s required, what you can claim and the documentation we need.

3. Apply to renew your licence.

  • Click on “Licensing” and “Renew my licence”.
  • Here you’ll find the step by step process to renew your licence.
  • Upload all the necessary documents and information we ask you for.

4. Complete the application form

5. Submit the form.
