When do the new Act and Regulation come into effect?

The new Societies Act and Regulation came into effect on April 1, 2021.

How long do societies have to transition?

Societies will have until March 31, 2023, to transition to conform to the new Act.

What do societies have to do?

As part of its transition application, a society will have to upload its complete set of bylaws to the Yukon Online Corporate Registry.

The new bylaws must be approved by special resolution ofmembers at a general meeting before submitting the transition application.

Societies may choose one of the following

  1.  Adopt the model bylaws; or
  2. Create custom bylaws. However, bylaws must comply with the new Act and also cannot violate other legislation, such as the human rights legislation, the Canadian Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, and other statute and case law.
